With the risks presented by wooden pallets in the transport and storage of products, especially in the case of the food and pharmaceutical industries, which require special hygiene care, fumigation treatment is necessary to control pests.<\/p>\n

To ensure a more efficient logistics chain and make material handling and movement operations in foreign trade safer, government authorities in the main international markets, including Brazil, are opting to replace wooden packaging and pallets with plastic products.<\/p>\n

Know what fumigation is<\/h2>\n

Fumigation is the phytosanitary treatment to control pests that can be found in wooden packaging or agricultural products.<\/p>\n

Fumigation consists of a type of pest control carrying out dry disinfection. Chemical treatment uses chemical compounds or volatile pesticide formulations \u2013 so-called fumigants \u2013 which can be applied in a vapor or gas state. Smoke is used because it is a means of homogeneous diffusion of an active ingredient, which makes it possible to reach particles spread in the air and fixed particles.<\/p>\n

The procedure is carried out in an airtight system, aiming to disinfest materials, objects and installations that cannot be subjected to other forms of treatment.<\/p>\n

The gases most used for fumigation are methyl bromide \u2013 stored in cylinders and used mainly in applications made in containers and wooden products \u2013 and phosphine \u2013 used in tablet form in the holds of ships and silos. These products, however, are extremely toxic. Furthermore, methyl bromide is considered harmful to nature, as the effects of the product harm the ozone layer.<\/p>\n

To ensure worker safety, all operations involving fumigation require the use of masks, boots, helmets, reflective vests, safety cones and warning signs.<\/p>\n

Understand how fumigation works<\/h2>\n

In fumigation with methyl bromide, raw wooden packaging and supports intended for packaging goods in international transit must be fumigated, so that, after a minimum period of 24 hours, the Concentration-Time (CT) and the minimum final residual concentration of methyl bromide specified by MAPA are reached.<\/p>\n

Understand why wooden pallets need fumigation<\/h2>\n

As a porous material, wood can harbor insects and bacteria. Even if your wooden pallet is heat treated, it may develop mold after a day left in the rain. Therefore, every product exported and imported using wooden packaging and pallets needs a fumigation certificate.<\/p>\n

Fumigation is carried out as required by phytosanitary agencies in many countries, including Brazil, with the aim of preventing the circulation of high-risk pests or fungi that could cause damage to transported products.<\/p>\n

Instruction Normativa Mapa n\u00ba 32\/2015<\/a>, which establishes procedures for inspection and phytosanitary certification of packaging or wooden pieces intended for packaging goods for import or export, determines that these materials must undergo phytosanitary treatment approved and recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture. The objective is to ensure the removal or elimination of pests and guarantee complete phytosanitary safety.<\/p>\n

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply determines three possibilities for phytosanitary treatments for quarantine purposes approved for packaging and wooden supports: heat treatment or oven drying, heat treatment via dielectric heating using microwaves or fumigation with methyl bromide, a toxic pesticide.<\/p>\n

According to the standard, the raw wood used in the manufacture of packaging and supports intended for the packaging of goods in international transit must be peeled and free from pests at any evolutionary stage, so as not to show any signs of active pest infestation.<\/p>\n

The protection offered by fumigation generates costs and has a short shelf life. Furthermore, the wooden pallet can release splinters, damaging products that come into direct contact with the pallet \u2013 there are cases of splinters being found in food packaging, such as beef jerky.<\/p>\n

It is also worth noting that damage caused to transported goods, resulting from sanitary measures, disinfection or fumigation, is excluded from the general and special conditions of transport insurance, and may therefore generate losses.<\/p>\n

The ideal and safest way to control pests is to use rotomolded plastic pallet<\/strong><\/a>, which eliminates the fumigation treatment necessary for wooden packaging and does not require pest control certification for export, optimizing logistics and thus avoiding bureaucracy.<\/p>\n
