The global reality shows that water, previously considered an inexhaustible good, is, in fact, a renewable, but limited, good. This is why many companies list saving water as one of their main sustainability actions. The misuse of water is often punished by government bodies or institutions. But an even greater damage to a company’s image is disapproval from its public.

Today it is possible to find a series of product options on the market for capturing rainwater, such as cisterns. This type of reservoir causes water to be accumulated in large tanks, often with filtration, allowing it to be used for various activities, such as washing patios, garages, common areas, vehicles and watering plants.

Rainwater collection cisterns: the solution adopted by McDonald’s

McDonald’s, the largest fast food chain in the world, recently developed a partnership with Tecnotri, one of the largest national manufacturers of modular vertical rainwater cisterns. Based in Vila Maria, in Rio Grande Sul, Tecnotri began supplying the first units to McDonald’s in November 2016. Initially, the cisterns will be installed in two locations considered to be the heart of the McDonald’s: McDonald’s University and the company’s corporate headquarters in Brazil, both located in Alphaville, São Paulo. The idea is to expand the partnership, implementing the system for capturing rainwater also in the chain’s stores throughout Brazil.

Innovative ideas for sustainability and water conservation

The rainwater collected by cisterns installed at Universidade do McDonald’s will be used to water the organic garden, which offers fresh vegetables to all employees who have lunch there. In total, there will be four Tecnotri cisterns.

Another three cisterns will be part of the Corporate Center, capturing water from air conditioning drains. The reused water will be used to wash common areas and water all the trees on site.

The forecast is that around 25 thousand liters of rainwater will be collected per month. “We are very happy with this partnership and we believe that this project can serve as a model for all McDonald’s stores in the country”, highlighted Fred Leite, National Corporate Business Manager at Tecnotri.
