Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is one of the plastics most used by Brazilian industries. According to the Brazilian Plastics Industry Association (Abiplast), it corresponds to 20.6% of all plastic consumed in 2019.
Due to its high rate of use, one of the concerns is improper disposal. The most appropriate and correct solution is to recycle the products. That’s exactly what we’re going to talk about today. Continue reading and understand how this process works for LDPE and discover Tecnotri’s Ecoblack line, a line made from recycled products.
How does LDPE recycling work and what are its advantages?
Recycling this type of polymer includes washing the collected parts, grinding and compacting, actions that are part of a transformation process, to give rise to new products.
Among the advantages of recycling LDPE, we can mention the reduction of waste in landfills. Furthermore, the process prevents the use of new raw materials to manufacture plastic products, preserving reserves of non-renewable natural resources.
In addition, companies that invest in LDPE recycling gain greater credibility, promoting their own image, as the practice is sustainable and environmentally responsible.
What are the steps in recycling LDPE?
After collecting these plastics, they are sanitized with water and placed in a shredding machine. This first phase is called agglutination and serves to transform the packaging into small crushed pieces of plastic.
Next, the already bound material is taken to an extruder, which will melt the waste. The next step varies from company to company. In some industries, a “spaghetti machine” is used, which will leave the melted mass in the shape of different “spaghetti”.
Afterwards, these lines, which are at high temperature, are placed in a tank of cold water to be cut into small pieces of plastic. In other organizations, the melted mass is placed in a cold mold to create a new part.
