First, find out what NBR 14725 is
NBR 14725 is a standard published by ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards) and addresses the way in which chemical products must be packaged, to ensure the safety of both the content and employees. Therefore, all companies in the segment need to be aware of their requirements and updates.
The compilation of requirements in this standard helps buyers to store and handle products without risk to their health. Furthermore, it helps users to use the goods without compromising the environment.
Why did NBR 14725 need to be updated?
With the aim of providing clearer information regarding the dangers related to chemical substances and mixtures, the Commission for the Study of Information on Safety, Health and the Environment Related to Chemical Products (CE-010:101.005), of the Brazilian Chemistry Committee (ABNT/CB-010), carried out a review of NBR 14725.
The aim is to further ensure the safety of workers, consumers and the environment.
What were the changes to NBR 14725?
The new version brought different changes, including the main ones:
– Unification of the standard into a single document, divided into seven chapters and containing seventeen annexes;
– Update of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS);
– Change in classification criteria for various hazard classes;
– Implementation of two new hazard classifications, such as “desensitized explosives” and “hazardous to the ozone layer”;
– Update of requirements for labeling small packaging and products for internal use;
– Addition and/or updating of new danger and precaution phrases;
– Renaming of the document from Chemical Product Safety Information Sheet (FISPQ) to Safety Data Sheet (FDS).
What is the deadline to change the requirements of the new version of NBR 14725?
Industries have 24 months to adapt to the new rules. After this period, companies are subject to fines and legal losses. This is because, by not following the requirements, the organization puts the consumer, its employees and the environment at risk.
