Why do we celebrate World Water Day?

This Wednesday, March 22nd, is World Water Day. This day was established by the UN in 1992 with the aim of generating discussions and raising awareness among the population about the importance of this natural resource that may be lacking for a large part of the population in the very near future.

Water is not an infinite resource. Only 0.008% of all water on our planet is drinkable. Furthermore, many sources of drinking water, such as rivers and dams, are being contaminated and degraded by human actions. Therefore, it is extremely important to adopt measures to save and preserve water.

Care and Attitudes to Preserve Water

Some small attitudes in our daily lives can make a big difference. How: Do not throw garbage in the streets and rivers; avoid long baths; do not leave the tap running while brushing your teeth or washing the dishes, using it only when it is really necessary; When washing cars and sidewalks, use a bucket instead of a hose and reuse water in different situations.

Reusing water is an attitude that has a huge impact on water savings. And it was this action adopted by a Condominium in greater Florianópolis.

System for Water Collection from Swimming Pools in Condominiums

water collection condominium

Located in Biguaçú/SC, greater Florianópolis, Condomínio Mirante das 4 Estações, saw the need to implement a system for capturing rainwater and reusing water.

After receiving a visit from a technician specializing in Modular Cisterns and projects for water capture and reuse, it was realized that rainwater capture was not an option for the site. This is because there was already an initial design for the towers, in which water was collected from the roofs through pipes embedded in the columns, called plumadas.

Therefore, to ensure that the condominium’s objective of preserving and consciously using water was met, it was necessary to think of other ways and alternatives. Taking inspiration from major works in vertical condominiums, the possibility of capturing water from the pool was realized, which would generate extremely significant savings.

Around 240 families live in the Mirante das 4 Estações condominium and have a swimming pool with a capacity of 600 thousand liters. With the large number of residents and the increase in demand in the summer, two backwashes per week are necessary. Which means using more than 42 thousand liters of water just for this purpose.

In partnership with Acqua Reduz, a Tecnotri accredited company in greater Florianópolis, specialist Fred Leite, National Manager of the Tecnotri Environmental Line, carried out a feasibility study on capturing and reusing water from the pool in the condominium, using modular cisterns that could be easily adapted to the condominium’s external environment.

To implement the project, 4 Cisternas of 1050 liters each were initially installed. This water reuse system will be used for washing common areas, and mainly for watering the mini football field.

With the completion of the system installation, everyone in the condominium was completely satisfied with the initiative adopted. This has made it easier, as areas that previously took up to a matter of months to be irrigated and washed will now have plenty of water to carry out these works; ensuring greater sustainability, so important for the condominium.

On World Water Day, seeing examples like this from Condomínio 4 Estações show us how it is within everyone’s reach to rethink the use of water and contribute in some way to the preservation of this asset so essential for life.
